Q. What is Reef Fest?

A. Reef Fest is a series of concerts, club nights and musical events taking place in South Florida and beyond to raise awareness for the need to conserve and protect coral reefs throughout the world. It is an official project of the International Year of The Reef 2008 (IYOR), a global campaign undertaken by the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) and many government agencies to promote the value and importance of coral reefs and to make known threats to their sustainability worldwide. Monies raised by Reef Fest go directly to the Reef Fest Fund, administered by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), one of the fastest growing 501(c)3 non-profit conservation organizations in the world. The Reef Fest Fund is designed to support coral research and conservation in many areas throughout the world.

Q. Who is Reef Fest?

A. Reef Fest is organized by a group of volunteers guided by Dr. Jim Hendee, a marine biologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Miami. Key supporters of Reef Fest include the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Coral Reef Conservation Program, the White Water To Blue Water organization (WW2BW), the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation and others (see our growing list of sponsors). Reef Fest presents some of the best musical artists from South Florida and elsewhere (see the list of performing artists) playing at venues around the area and at events supported by many dedicated contributors. Reef Fest is you!

Q. How does Reef Fest raise money for the Reef Fest Fund?

A. Reef Fest raises money for the Reef Fest Fund through ticket sales, admission fees, merchandise sales and additional donations collected onsite at Reef Fest events, as well as from donations made directly to the Reef Fest Fund via the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation website, linked from reeffest.org and other websites. Depending on the generosity of our sponsors underwriting production and promotional costs, it is projected that approximately 70% of gross revenues generated by Reef Fest will go directly to the Reef Fest Fund.

Q. Who are the beneficiaries of Reef Fest?

A. Reef Fest benefits the Reef Fest Fund, administered by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), one of the fastest growing 501(c)3 non-profit conservation organizations in the world. Donations made directly to the Reef Fest Fund via the NFWF website can even be earmarked for specific geographic locations. All donations made to NFWF are tax deductible and donors receive a certificate suitable for submission to the IRS. Of course, the ultimate beneficiaries of Reef Fest are the endangered coral reefs of the world!

Q. How will the Reef Fest Fund be dispersed?

A. A special Reef Fest Fund Proposal Review Committee, consisting of some of the world s most respected coral reef scientists and conservationists, will be convened at the end of 2008. The committee will send out Request for Proposals (RFP) through various channels (including 5,000 subscribers of Coral-List), with special emphasis placed on regional research where large donations may have been received in the donation process (see above). Prospective coral researchers and conservationists will compete for Reef Fest funds through a competitive proposal process. Proposals for specific regions that are identified in the RFP will receive the highest priority of review. Proposal awardees will submit periodic progress reports as well as a final summary, hopefully contributing quality publications to the public and/or for scientific journals.

You can also donate directly to the Reef Fest Fund online via the NFWF website, linked from reeffest.org. All donations made to the NFWF are tax deductible and donors immediately receive online a certificate suitable for submission to the IRS.

A. You can sponsor Reef Fest as an individual, business or corporation by underwriting production and promotional costs with funds and in-kind donations.
